Snowboard Lessons or Teach Yourself? An Honest Answer

If you are staring at your new or rented snowboard and wondering whether to just hit the slopes and figure it out on your own, you are not alone. Plenty of people ask themselves this exact question every winter. The honest answer is that a professional lesson is almost always the smarter and more enjoyable choice — especially if you want to actually enjoy your time on the mountain instead of spending it frustrated or nursing bruises.

Why so many people try to teach themselves

It is tempting. Snowboarding looks cool, the mountain is right there, and the internet is full of 'learn to snowboard in a day' videos. Why pay for a lesson when you could save the money and look like a natural straight away?

The reality is that snowboarding is harder than it looks. The balance, the physics and the muscle memory involved are unlike anything else. Most people who try to self-teach end up building bad habits that are difficult, and sometimes painful, to unlearn later. They spend whole days sliding on their backside, falling awkwardly and getting exhausted before they have made it cleanly down a single beginner run.

What lessons actually give you

The first thing is speed. A qualified instructor breaks the fundamentals down in the right order, so in a lesson or two you master your basic stance, how to stop safely, how to turn and how to get back up without wearing yourself out. Self-taught riders often take several trips to reach that same point, and some never quite do.

The second is safety. Snowboarding has a steep learning curve, and the most common injuries happen in the first few days, before people understand how to fall correctly or control their speed. A good instructor teaches you to manage that risk from the start, which means fewer bruises, fewer twisted knees and a lot more confidence.

Then there is the simple matter of fun. Nothing kills the stoke faster than hours stuck on the bunny hill sliding sideways. With guidance you are linking turns and genuinely riding much sooner, and that feeling of flow arrives far quicker than it does on your own. You also get feedback a video can never provide — an instructor watching you in real time, correcting to your body, balance and learning style, and answering your gear questions on the spot.

Finally, you build good habits from day one. Leaning back too much, improper edging, staring down at the board — these are everywhere among self-taught riders, and fixing them later means unlearning, which takes time and patience. Starting with proper technique sets you up for a lifetime of better riding.

What about athletic, fast learners?

Even strong athletes and quick learners benefit enormously from lessons. Snowboarding uses muscles and movement patterns that are completely different from skateboarding, surfing or skiing, and the mountain environment — cold, snow, changing conditions — adds another layer on top. Plenty of people who are excellent at other sports still take lessons when they pick up a board, and progress faster for it.

What a beginner lesson actually looks like

At EPIC Ski & Snowboard School, beginner lessons are built to be fun, supportive and low-pressure. You start on gentle terrain in a small group or a private session, and your instructor covers how to strap in and move around, how to fall and get back up safely, and how to make your first turns and link them together. Most people are surprised how much they improve in just a few hours. You can see the full range of options in our lesson packages.

The bottom line

You can teach yourself to snowboard — but there is little reason to want to. Investing in a lesson, or a short series of them, is one of the best decisions you can make for your riding. You stay safer, progress faster, have far more fun, and set yourself up to actually enjoy the sport instead of fighting it.

So if you are ready to stop sliding on your backside and start properly riding, book a beginner snowboard lesson and our certified instructors will get you shredding with confidence. See you on the mountain.
